We need your signature! NorCal MHA is hosting a letter writing campaign for community members to prevent Congress from passing the American Health Care Act (AHCA). Drop in to designated locations to sign pre-drafted letters with paid postage that will be mailed to Congress. Your letters will help inform Congress of the importance of the ACA and Covered California to you, your family, and the mental health community. If passed, the AHCA will phase out the income-based health care subsidies available under ACA/Covered California to fund tax cuts for the wealthiest 1% of Americans. What’s worse, the AHCA will eliminate coverage for mental health and substance abuse services. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that under the AHCA, a staggering 14 million Americans will lose their health insurance by 2018 and 24 million in total will lose access to affordable health insurance over the next decade.

KEY COMPONENTS OF THE AHCA BILL THAT WILL AFFECT HEALTH CARE IN CALIFORNIA

  • Eliminates Income- and Location-Based Subsidies: The program would convert to a system of capped per-capita federal grants to the states starting in 2020.

  • Phases out state Medicaid expansion: States would lose enhanced federal funding for new Medicaid expansion enrollees at the end of 2019. Bye-bye Covered California!

  • Nixes minimum essential benefits in Medicaid managed care: The bill eliminates the requirement for Medicaid managed-care plans to cover minimum essential benefits by the end of 2019. This cuts off access to mental health and substance use treatment for millions of low income Americans.
